Machu Picchu is much more than a tourist destination: it is a symbol of Andean engineering and worldview that requires special care. Since 2024, Peru’s Ministry of Culture has organized visits into 3 main circuits comprising 10 routes. This system is expected to remain in place in 2027, with the goal of balancing the visitor experience with the conservation of the sanctuary.
Each circuit offers a different experience: Circuit 1 (Panoramic) is ideal for the classic photo and scenic viewpoints, Circuit 2 (Classic) is the most comprehensive option for first-time visitors to the citadel, and Circuit 3 (Royalty) is the only one that allows visitors to climb Huayna Picchu. Here, we explain each route in detail so you can choose based on your available time, physical fitness, and what interests you most.
Important note: Visitor capacity and ticket prices for 2027 may be subject to adjustments. We recommend always checking updated availability and prices on the official platform tuboleto.cultura.pe before booking.

Circuit 1 (Panoramic Circuit)
The Panoramic Circuit is a favorite among visitors who want to capture the classic postcard view of Machu Picchu from above. It also includes routes to scenic viewpoints and historic trails.
Route 1A: Machu Picchu Mountain
Combines access to the citadel with a climb up Machu Picchu Mountain (the highest mountain in the sanctuary). From the summit, visitors can enjoy unique views of the Urubamba River, Huayna Picchu, and the surrounding mountain range. The hike is challenging, and the maximum visit duration is approximately 6-7 hours. Ideal for those looking for physical challenges and panoramic photos. Available year-round.
Route 1B: Upper Terrace (Classic Photo)
The most direct option for capturing the iconic postcard view from the Guardian’s House, with Huayna Picchu in the background. The route takes around 2.5 hours and focuses on the upper terraces. Perfect if you want to avoid long hikes while still enjoying Machu Picchu’s most famous view. Available year-round.

Route 1C: Inti Punku (Sun Gate)
Intipunku was the original entrance for travelers arriving along the Inca Trail. From this point, Machu Picchu appears framed by the surrounding mountains. The hike takes approximately 4 hours. Available only during the high season. An especially beautiful experience at sunrise.

Route 1D: Inca Bridge
A trail built along the side of a cliff, featuring a wooden log bridge that could be removed to control access. The route takes approximately 3 hours. Less demanding than Machu Picchu Mountain, but with an atmosphere of mystery. Available only during the high season.
Circuit 2 (Classic Circuit)
The Classic Circuit offers the most balanced experience and is recommended for most travelers visiting Machu Picchu for the first time. It allows visitors to explore temples, plazas, neighborhoods, and agricultural sectors in a comprehensive way.
Route 2A: Designed Classic Circuit
Passes through the most iconic landmarks: Intihuatana, Temple of the Sun, Main Plaza, and residential areas. Approximate duration: 2.5 hours. It is the best option for understanding how the citadel functioned.

Route 2B: Lower Terrace
Similar to Route 2A, but with access through lower platforms. It makes walking easier and offers a different perspective of the citadel. The route also takes approximately 2.5 hours and is available year-round.
Circuit 3 (Royalty Circuit)
Includes some of the most famous and sought-after routes, particularly Huayna Picchu. It is designed for visitors seeking adventure or those who prefer exploring the lower section of the citadel.
Route 3A: Huayna Picchu Mountain (Wayna Picchu)
One of the most challenging and memorable experiences. The trail is steep and narrow in certain sections, but the views from the summit are exceptional. The full route can take up to 5.5-6 hours. Tickets are limited and sell out quickly. Available year-round (subject to temporary closures due to weather conditions or maintenance).

Route 3B: Designed Royalty Circuit (Lower Temples)
Explores the lower section of Machu Picchu, where temples and ceremonial spaces are located. It is a more relaxed and accessible option (approximately 2.5 hours). Recommended for families, older adults, and visitors who prefer to avoid strenuous hikes. Available year-round.
Route 3C: Great Cavern (Temple of the Moon)
One of the most demanding routes. It leads to the Great Cavern, a temple carved into the rock. The hike can take up to 7 hours and requires good physical fitness. Available only during the high season.
Route 3D: Huchuy Picchu
Huchuy Picchu (“small mountain”) is a less demanding alternative to Huayna Picchu. The climb is short, and the complete route takes approximately 3.5 hours. It offers beautiful views of the citadel. Available only during the high season.
