📅Day 4: Maras, Moray, and Salt Mines Excursion

Breakfast at the hotel.

Our tour begins with pickup from your hotel between 8:30 and 8:45 a.m. We’ll head toward the town of Maras, passing through charming villages and beautiful scenery along the way. We’ll visit the following sites:

MARAS: Located in the province of Urubamba at 3,300 m.a.s.l., offering stunning views of the Vilcanota mountain range and the snow-capped peaks of Chicón (5,530 m.a.s.l.) and Verónica (5,682 m.a.s.l.).
This picturesque town preserves attractions from the pre-Hispanic, colonial, and republican periods, featuring colonial streets and doorways with noble crests from the 17th and 18th centuries.

MORAY: Situated about 7 km southwest of Maras and 53 km from Cusco at an altitude of 3,385 m.a.s.l., this unique archaeological complex consists of massive circular terraces built by the Incas for agricultural experimentation. The largest depression reaches 150 meters deep, with terrace heights averaging 1.8 meters between levels.
It is believed that the structure sits atop natural rock formations that allow water drainage, preventing flooding during the rainy season. The temperature difference between the top and bottom can reach up to 15°C, showcasing the Incas’ advanced agricultural techniques.

SALINERAS (Salt Mines): Located northwest of Maras, these 2,000 small pools have been used since Inca times for salt extraction. The saltwater spring that flows from the mountain fills the pools during the dry season, solidifying gradually as the water evaporates. The salt is then harvested for local consumption and trade.

After our visit, we’ll return to Cusco.
