If you’re reading this, you’re probably about to embark on one of the most epic hikes of your life: the expedition to Choquequirao, Machu Picchu’s “sacred sister.” This isn’t just any trail. It’s a demanding, remote, multi-day journey — and absolutely unforgettable. Your backpack will be more than luggage: it will be your companion, your first aid kit, your kitchen, and your refuge. Packing it right will make all the difference.
1. Main Backpack and Daypack

Start with a 50 to 65-liter backpack with good lumbar support. Add a small daypack (20–25L) for short hikes from camp. Make sure both packs have waterproof covers — rain in the Andes is as unpredictable as it is magical.
2. Layered Clothing: Your Andean Armor
Temperatures in Choquequirao can change within minutes. Bring technical, lightweight clothing you can layer:
- Thermal base layer (preferably merino wool or polyester)
- Insulating mid-layer (fleece or synthetic down)
- Waterproof and windproof outer layer
- Convertible pants, long-sleeve shirt, cap, and neck gaiter (buff)
Don’t forget a rain poncho. It sounds basic, but it can save your day (and your mood).
3. Trekking Boots and Foot Care
Good waterproof, well-broken-in boots are essential. Don’t wear brand-new shoes on the trail. Also bring lightweight sandals to rest your feet at camp, and several pairs of technical socks. And yes, pack some foot powder or anti-chafing cream your feet will thank you.
4. Essential Gear
- Trekking poles (with rubber tips)
- Headlamp (with extra batteries)
- Sleeping bag (-5°C rating if hiking between May and August)
- Insulated sleeping pad or lightweight mat
- Water filter or purification tablets
- Reusable water bottle and hydration bladder (Camelbak)
5. Hygiene and First Aid Kit
Don’t underestimate a good first aid kit: include painkillers, bandages, altitude sickness pills, insect repellent, sunscreen, biodegradable toilet paper, and hand sanitizer. Add a quick-dry towel and basic hygiene products.
6. Extras That Make a Difference
- Light camera or your phone with plenty of free memory
- Solar charger or power bank
- Energy snacks (nuts, granola bars, dark chocolate)
- Dry bag to protect documents and electronics
- A notebook or journal to capture your Choquequirao inspirations
